Lady Gobbler softball season ends

Expectations were high for the Lady Gobbler softball program entering the 2017 season. Last year’s team advanced to the regional finals for the first time in school history. Even though this season’s team did not reach that round, Cuero softball still boasted an impressive season. Their season finished in the area round to Orange Grove, losing in two games, 2-0 and 4-2.

Gobblers advance to area playoffs, face Robstown

Michael Barta made his first varsity playoff start in the Gobblers’ playoff-opener against Crystal City. Michael settled in from the start, tossing four shutout innings before giving way to Garrett Veit in the final frame. Cuero only needed five innings to defeat the Javelinas for the bi-district championship, 10-0.

The Gobblers were equally as impressive with their bats led by Veit who went two for three with a single, RBI triple and one run.

“We came out ready to play,” head coach Phil Schwarz said. “I think we swung the bats throughout the lineup. It wasn’t just the top of the lineup; it was the bottom of the lineup. Anytime you’ve got one through nine swinging the bats, you got a chance to score some runs.”

PUTTING in the work

For the fourth consecutive year, the Cuero High School girls golf team advanced to the regional tournament. This year’s tournament was held at Oso Golf Course in Corpus Christi on April 24-25.

Jocelyn Villafranca placed fourth individually with a two-day score of 177. As a team, Cuero finished 11th out of 16 schools.

Seniors Abby Bridges and Villafranca talked about their time competing for the Lady Gobblers. “It was a lot of fun, very memorable,” Bridges said. “I made lots of memories with this group of girls. It was fun advancing four years in a row to regionals. Being district champ was fun for me.”

Lady Gobblers earn bi-district sweep

To say Regan Dunn and the Cuero Lady Gobbler softball team opened the post-season on fire would be a gross understatement. There is still plenty of work ahead, but they started well with a bi-district sweep of the Lytle Pirates.

In game one, Cuero won, 8-0, led by their junior pitcher Dunn who tossed a complete game one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and went four for five at the plate with two inside the park home runs.

Dunn was the only Lady Gobbler swining a hot bat. Senior Maegan Pakebusch was four for four with a double, three singles and one RBI.

Lady Gobblers finish second in district

Regan Dunn made sure to do her part in giving the Lady Gobbler seniors a win in their final home game. Dunn was masterful in the circle, notching a no-hitter in Cuero’s final district game, 6-0, against Pleasanton. She also struck out 17 batters.

Strong pitching performances from Dunn and Maegan Pakebusch stood out during district competition.

“We pitched very well,” head coach Cody Miller said. “I kinda know what I’m gonna get out of Regan on a day-in-day-out basis, and Maegan Pakebusch even picked up a win during that time. That’s a big thing going into the playoffs.”
