Martha Sanchez

Martha C. Sanchez, 76, of Cuero passed away Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017. She was born Aug. 9, 1940 in Cuero to the late Miguel G. Carmona and San Juanita V. Carmona. Martha enjoyed sewing, photography, traveling and collecting antiques. She was a friend to everyone and always willing to help wherever she could.

She is survived by her daughter JoAnn Parker of Elgin; sons, Gilbert C. Torres (Mary) and Armando C. Diaz, Sr. MBA (Michelle); sister, Marina Munoz of Cuero; brothers, Rev. John Carmona (Rachel) of Victoria, Manuel Carmona (Gloria) of Cuero, Mike Carmona (Josie) of Cuero and Jesse Carmona of Victoria; grandchildren, Timothy Torres of Cuero, Armando C. Diaz, Jr., U.S. Navy stationed in Mayport FL, Matthew Valdez and Ashley Valdez both of Elgin and Samantha S. Diaz of El Paso.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, George Villa; sister, Rachel Carmona; and brothers, Rev. Abraham Carmona and Albert Carmona.

Donrell Thomas

Donrell “Pokey” Thomas, 66, passed on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017 at Cuero Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Pokey was the fourth child born to Leslie Thomas Sr. and Jeralene Mills Thomas on Feb. 27, 1950. He attended Daule grade school and graduated from Cuero High. He professed a hope in Christ at an early age and united with Mt. Herman Baptist Church. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for two years. Pokey was employed at Alcoa Point Comfort and Welders Equipment. He later worked several jobs in the Cuero Area.

Pokey was preceded in death by his parents, sister Faye Ruth Lee; and brother Michael Thomas.

He leaves to cherish his memories, daughter, Brandi Thomas of Cuero; brothers, Leslie Thomas. Jr. (Phyllis) of Victoria and Leonard Thomas (Brenda) of Portland; grandchildren Jazz, Exzeric, and Brinna all of Cuero; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Alvin Campbell

Alvin Leon Campbell was born March 12, 1953 in Yoakum, Texas in Lavaca County to Leroy and Helen Caldwell Campbell. He grew up in Cheapside Community outside of Cuero.

Alvin acknowledged and professed his belief in God at the New Hope Baptist Church Lockhart Community. Alvin graduated from Cuero High School in May of 1971 with honors, thus receiving a scholarship from Prairie View A&M University, where he excelled and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Education with History, Magna Cum Laude in three years. He taught World History and was the head of his department in the Bellaire ISD in Houston. He was a true historian and enjoyed traveling to over 15 different countries as well as all across the United States. 

Alvin was called home on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Helen Campbell; brothers Leroy Campbell, Jr., Joseph F. Campbell and Lawrence H. Campbell; and niece Cynthia A. Adams.

Terry Jurek

Terry Ray Jurek, 71, of Cuero passed away Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017. He was born Sept. 19, 1945 in Gonzales to Charlie and Isabell (Bell) Hull Jurek. Terry served in the United States Army and was a Vietnam Veteran. He enjoyed woodworking, camping, fishing, hunting and traveling.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dorthea (Dot) Marwick Jurek; sons, Terry Dale Jurek (Morgan Chapman) of Hallettsville and Charlie Ray Jurek of Cuero, Jeramy Ray Dygert (Ashley) of Victoria; three grandchildren; brother Jim Jurek of Winnfield, Louisiana; and sister, Debbie Folden of Winnfield, Louisiana.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charles Jurek and Robert Jurek; and sister, Earlene Placker.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Feb. 23 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Freund Funeral Home.

Keith Hans

Keith Edward Hans, 49, of Cuero passed away Monday, Feb. 13, 2017. He was born Aug. 22, 1967 in Sinton to Michael Wayne and Jannette Pilat Hans. Keith graduated from St. Michael’s Catholic School and then went on to graduate from Cuero High School. He then went  to Bee County College where he received his degree in Mechanics. He worked as a mechanic at Honda of Victoria. Keith was a lifetime member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church where he was an usher and a door greeter. He was also a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his mother;  and brother, Patrick W. Hans.

He is preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 9 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with a rosary to be recited at 9:30 a.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial to begin at 10 a.m. with Father David Berger officiating. Interment to follow in Hillside Cemetery.

Mary Huerta

Mary Carmen Huerta, 70, of Cuero went be with her Lord on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017. She was born Feb. 24, 1946 in San Antonio to the late Manuel and Dolores Rodriguez Flores. Mary married Gilbert Huerta on June 5, 1966 in San Antonio. She enjoyed sewing, crochet, taking care of the elderly but, most of all she enjoyed singing the gospel and telling people about the Lord.

She is survived by her husband, Gilbert; daughters, Isabel Huerta, Carmen Huerta both of Cuero and Dolores Huerta of Victoria; sons, Gilbert Huerta, Jr. (Melinda) of San Antonio and Jeremiah Huerta of Austin; sisters, Irma Longoria (Armando); brothers, Manuel Flores, Jr. (Mellie), Albert Flores (Liz), and Jamie Flores all of San Antonio; five granddaughters, five grandsons and two great-grandsons.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Beatrice Flores; and brothers, Juan Flores and Hector Flores.

Richard Buchhorn

Richard C. Buchhorn, 66, of  Cuero passed away Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017. He was born Dec. 5, 1950 in Cuero to the late Emil C. and Joyce Leubert  Buchhorn. Richard served in the United States Air Force.

He is survived by his sister, Gayle Smith of Cuero; brother, Norby Buchhorn of Cuero; aunts, Alva Leubert Arndt (Clarence) and Dorothy Nell Sarvis; cousins, Michael Arndt, Randall Arndt, Denise Afflerbach, Douglas Leubert and Diane Leubert Medina.

Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. at Freund Funeral  Home.

Jack Hoskinson

Jack W. Hoskinson, 89, of Cuero passed away Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017. He was born Feb. 28, 1927 in Hutchinson, Kansas to Washington L. and Mary Frances Osborne Hoskinson. Jack  married the love of his life, Bertha M. Karkseek on July 28, 1945. He worked as a pressman for the San Antonio Light, Austin Statesman and the Houston Post newspapers. He also enjoyed bay fishing, bowling and clogging dancing. 

He is survived by his loving wife, Bertha; daughters, Penne Matusek (Tommy) of Westhoff, Kayliene McWhorter (David) of Dickinson; brother, Phillip D. Hoskinson of Burrton, Kansas; grandchildren, Shanwdy White (Howard) of Hutchinson, Kansas; two great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marie Moore; and brother, Leon Hoskinson.

Bisente Garibay

Bisente Garibay, 76, of Cuero passed away Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017. He was born Jan. 22, 1941 in Dewitt County to the late Nicholas and Julia Tejeda Garibay.

He is survived by his sons Ricky Garibay, Vincent Garibay Jr., daughter Bernidine Navarro, sisters Caroline DeLosSantos, Mary Alvarez, Molly Cuellar, Gloria Solis, Manuela Dougay and brothers Lupe and John Garibay. He is also survived by six grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Estella Garibay, daughter Lisa Garibay, sister Ramona Galindo and brother Francisco Garibay.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 at The Good Shepherd Church in Cuero.
