Letters to Editor

Dear Yorktown Community,

Starting with the 2017-2018 school year, the Commissioner of Education will label every public school and school district in Texas with a rating in the form of an A-F letter grade to comply with House Bill 2804. This grade is based primarily on a student’s performance on one test, the STAAR. In order to prepare for the implementation of these ratings in 2018, the state is publicly issuing preliminary A-F ratings on January 6, 2017 which are based on 2016 testing data as a trial run to inform schools and school districts what their grades would be if these ratings were applied this year. The primary arguments supporting the use of A-F ratings are that it simplifies the explanation of school and school district quality while at the same time helping to improve student performance.

Rau thankful for support

Dear Editor,

On Nov. 22, 2016, my husband, Alton J. Rau had a tragic truck accident over the 72 river bridge and ran into a tree on the other side. He is a bad diabetic and seems to have had a low sugar or suguire. Don’t know. Ended badly.

Would like to thank all the wonderful people who stopped to render aid especially Dr. Jennifer Gonzalez and paramedic (didn’t get name). To guys who cut him out from truck carefully and to helicopter transferring to San Antonio Military Medical Center Surgical Trauma Center Intensive Care, to Warm Springs Victoria and then Cuero Nursing & Rehab for extensive therapy occupational physical and speech and two surgeries.

To Alton’s sister, nieces, taking me daily to San Antonio to trauma unit. Cards, visits, phone calls, money, food, pastors visits, to the ladies going to my house to feed animals daily, St. Mark’s Lutheran men of Cuero building ramp at home, loaning of wheelchairs.

Letters to Editor

Dear Editor,

Many thanks to all who contributed to the success of the Yorktown Blue Santa program this year. The Yorktown Western Days Association is pleased to partner with the Yorktown Police Department to administer this program in Yorktown in an effort to spread the "Christmas Spirit" to the less fortunate of our community. Many families enjoyed a brighter holiday because of the generosity of others. We appreciate the support from the community through donations and assistance with helping purchase, wrap and deliver gifts. On behalf of Yorktown Western Days Association Board of Directors we wish you a blessed Holiday Season and Happy New Year.

Many Thanks, Tammy Bitterly, Executive Director Yorktown Western Days Association

Letters to Editor

Dear Editor,

Gerhardt's Jewelry was inadvertently omitted from the "Stuffed Stocking Giveaway" article. Mrs. Gerhardt's contribution of pair of earrings was a significant part of the nearly $500 collection of gift items and gift cards that was awarded to Heather Young. Gerhardt's Jewelry is a long time Yorktown Chamber member and is very supportive of the chambers efforts. My apologies for the omission.

Sincerely, Tammy Bitterly, Executive Director Yorktown Chamber of Commerce, Inc.

Driving force behind Pet Adoptions of Cuero

Dear Editor,

Dear Friends and Followers of Pet Adoptions of Cuero,

So sad to report that Ron Ledbetter passed away on Wednesday, December 21.

For those that don’t know, Ron was the driving force behind the creation of Pet Adoptions of Cuero, Inc. along with wife Peggy.

He was the first to recognize the need for a fully operational adoption center in our fair city.

His efforts along with Peggy’s helped create a wonderful working relationship with Cuero’s animal control system.

Those efforts led to an outpouring of support from the community and the well established center we are blessed to have today.

Ron’s heart and goal was to see that all of God’s creatures were given a second chance at finding forever homes.

He was an inspiration to all of us volunteers that man/woman the shelter daily.

We have lost a great leader – someone who came forward and said “we can make a difference – let’s find a way.”

Cuero Blue Santa

Dear Editor,

Cuero Blue Santa has had another successful year, providing Christmas joy for over 250 children. We would like to take this opportunity to say “Thank You” to the Cuero community for their volunteer time and financial support. Without your help, we would not be successful.

A special thank you to Partners Chevrolet and Paul Holcomb, Jr. for allowing Blue Santa to use their building for gift wrapping and hosting the families for gift pick-up. Another special thank you goes to the community organizations and Cuero ISD students that helped wrap over 800 gifts. We were so proud of the number of youth that helped this year; it is truly a testament to the strength of our community.

Blue Santa is a wonderful organization, but without the community’s support we would not be able to help the multitude of families.

Again, we say Thank You! Cuero Blue Santa

Merry Christmas from the Boehls

Dear Editor,

Merry Christmas to our dear family and friends! We are truly blessed to have each and every one of you in our lives.

This past year was a whirlwind for us. We spent countless hours praying, crying, and laughing. We learned a whole new vocabulary and met some really wonderful people. We could have never made it through our new lives with Leukemia without each and every one of you. It is because of your love, support, and prayers that we made it through the past 12 months and are looking forward to the Christmas Season and 2017. Every phone call, text message, email, card, and conversation means so much to us all; those are the little things that kept our heavy hearts light and alive through a very tough time. We are and forever will be grateful.
